I joined the British Army at 16 and served for 17 years. I started my first business in 2002, and in 2015 I joined the fire service, where I spent the next decade as an operational firefighter. Twenty-seven years of service between them, and I’ve now done my last shift.
It hasn’t all gone to plan. In 2024 I put a £2m cleaning and maintenance company into liquidation — the hardest lesson I’ve had, and the one that shapes how I mentor now. No fluff, no pretending it’s easy, just what actually works.
Today I own William Hale Fire & Security, Cobra Air and Cotswold Roof Cleaning. From October I’m off the roofs as well — someone else cleans them now. That’s not me stepping back, it’s the whole point: a business that only works when you’re in it isn’t a business, it’s a job you can’t leave.
So my week belongs to my companies and to the owners I mentor. Not to a shift rota, and not to a ladder.
I’m not coaching from a textbook. I’m running businesses in the same trade as the people I work with, this week — same weather, same customers, same invoices.
